Over on HancAquam, Fr. Philip invited his readers to repudiate the reversal of the Mexico City Policy. Part of sainthood means speaking against evil so that lies do not go unopposed. As a Catholic mother, and someone who has experienced a sort of disenfranchised maternity, I feel a sense of responsibility to speak against the statements made by Ms. Pelosi.
In keeping with my effort to “rejoice in the truth” I’m trying to make a habit of actually writing to elected officials when they are in error instead of just grousing about it, so I did write an email to Ms. Pelosi regarding her statements and including contraception in an economic stimulus package. I call upon all Catholics, but particularly Catholic mothers, to speak out against this hostility towards women and children.
Here is what I emailed in:
Dear Speaker Pelosi,
Frankly, I’m quite alarmed at the joining together of a “new era of responsibility” with your push for contraception. That such a move should come from a Catholic woman is beyond a disappointment. How about making reliable programs for student mothers to complete their educations without sacrificing motherhood? To support contraception without supporting motherhood is not pro-choice: it is an attack against the poor. You’re not reducing poverty, you’re reducing poor people and there is a very big difference between the two. Try helping mothers to not be poor instead of telling the poor to not be mothers.
Pushing a radical social agenda like this when the country is bleeding is infuriating, and is a surefire way to bring back the Republicans in 2012. In short, knock off the pandering to the extreme left and fix the very real problems that confront America, or you and all your fellow Democrats will have a whole host of angry constituents to answer to.
Please feel free to post your email to Speaker Pelosi in the comments! I’ll add to this post with all of what y’all say. Let’s get moving everyone!!

Hi
I am glad to walk along on you path to Sainthood and going forth!
I am so aware that elections have consequences. We are becoming fully aware of this faster than I thought we would.
BO states flatly”I won”. This is the same attitude of Pelosi and the rest of the CINO (catholic in name only) politicians. We are going to have a long four years.
I will write and pray.
Excellent. Beautifully stated.
Your comment on Fratres directing folks to your site failed to link. I’ve corrected, and to my surprise discovered another great site I will be linking to (and visiting) from now on… Feel free to do likewise with Fratres if you find it worthy…
May we love and adore God equally as much as He has been destroyed within the hearts and bodies of His children… (Blessed Angela Salawa)

I sent in via AFA to Obama:
Mr. President,
I congratulate you on your inauguration. I hope that you will do as you have promised to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution of the United States. Our founding documents are the quintessential expression of both the rights of human beings, and the relationship between human beings and their government (a beautiful reflection of Locke’s social contract).
Every time a government has made decisions which seek to lessen or negate the value of human beings, the result has been slavery and death. We see that in our own country’s history and that of others. Hitler was most successful in his policy of eugenics to stimulate the economy – but his success was the greatest tragedy of his era. Yes, his program was considerably more “proactive” than contraceptives and abortion, but they stem from the same ideology, an ideology which puts some above others.
We have seen the chasm of the evil of this in slavery, in racism and sexism, in the treatment of some like they are second class citizens and unfortunately as less than human. Women in crisis pregnancies will not find their problems solved by turning the temple of their bodies where life begins into a place of death. Have we not had enough of Auschwitz and 3/5s compromises? Are we not different from the beasts which devour their young? Does life only matter when it is convenient? Or do we all matter?
Your election represented hope for a lot of people. My hope is that you will find the truth in your heart, that all life matters, whatever the race, creed, color, sex, etc. No people can long survive by treating babies like punishments and the next generation like a burden more than a hope. All children matter, just as you did, despite the instability you grew up with. Your mother chose you. Honor her choice, and help mothers be able to make the same choice by helping them have more options.
Increasing access to abortion and contraceptives doesn’t eliminate poverty; it elminates poor people. Those who voted for you placed their hopes in your hands. Hope should not walk hand in hand with death. Please reconsider your position on these issues.

I doubt it will reach him, but maybe some staffer who reads it may reconsider.
My letter to the Speaker of the House follows. Even the Pentecostals with just 1.5 sacraments (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper as a memorial) get the basics right. One wonders what Ms. Pelosi’s problem is.

Ms. Pelosi (www.speaker.gov),
The news media has been reporting you as defending a move to add birth control funding to the new economic “stimulus” package, claiming “contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.” Your position is in direct opposition to the teaching of the Holy Catholic Church of which you have called yourself a member. This teaching is delineated in Humanae Vitae (see http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/paul_vi/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae_en.html).
Because you support abortion, contraception, embryonic stem cell research and gay marriage, you should stop calling yourself a Catholic and prehaps convert to one of the Protestant sects whose teachings are more in line with your policies. You are currently misleading many people who are devout to the Faith, and that is wrong. Additionally, we all should heed what 1st Corinthians 11:29 states: “For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.”
Respectfully,
Paul Primavera
Hello,
Here is the letter I sent to the Speakress of the House the other day:
Dear Madame Speaker,
I was dismayed to read of your comments on some Sunday morning news program to the effect that you approve of the government allocating millions of dollars for contraceptives as part of the economic stimulus program. I understand the need to cut costs, but do not think it goes far enough.
Much more in the way of cost cutting by limiting the number of state services to the poor, and the potentially poor can be undertaken…short of Dean Swift’s modest proposal.
We have the very successful example of China before us, one of the most vibrant economies on the globe today. I suspect that much of their current success is due to the vast number of un-born mouths to feed and children to spend money on caring for and educating that resulted from their ONE CHILD policy.
One must seriously consider doing the same thing here, and following up with sterilizations of any who violate the policy. In the interest of fairness, these should include castration of males, too.
Hoping for a favorable reply to my simple solution, I am,
Yours Truly,
Peter Gallaher
Here’s the latest from the People’s party, via The DRUDGE Report:
$335,000,000 FOR STD PREVENTION IN ECONOMIC STIMULUS BILL
Wed Jan 28 2009 09:58:30 ET
Democrats may have eliminated provisions on birth control and sod for the National Mall in the “job stimulus” — but buried on page 147 of the bill is stimulation for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases!
The House Democrats’ bill includes $335 million for sexually transmitted disease education and prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
In the past, the CDC has used STD education funding for programs that many Members of Congress find objectionable and arguably unrelated to a mission of economic stimulus [such as funding events called 'Booty Call' and 'Great Sex' put on by an organization that received $698,000 in government funds.]
“Whether this funding has merit is not the question; the point is it has no business in an economic plan supposedly focused on job creation,” says a stimulated Hill source.
